Question

My Ice 597 ci hd unit set on what ever color pallet i choose shows the jig going down fine on sonar but when it get's within a foot or so from bottom i loose site of it in all the color, i can see it going up and down if i really look close, but almost impossible with the colors above the actual bottom line seems like i have tried all the adjustments this is my first unit like this so any help would be great. Thanks to all.

what type of bottom of the lake are you fishing over. there could be sonar shadows being created by objects on the bottom. your jig will not show up below this shadow line no matter what color or brand or style of flasher/finder you use. if there is no objects that are causing a shadow then it could also happen if you happen to be fishing on a sharp drop off or break line. the sonar will only show the highest point and anything under that won't show up.

here is a video about transducer. you don't need to watch the whole thing unless you want to but at least watch to where Tom talks about the shadow effect. the video was made by Vexilar and Matt Johnson Outdoors but applies to all brands of flasher/finders.

I use black color as backdrop with the graph version of my 597, never use flasher mode. in this color palette, red is fish (or if all red on bottom means hard bottom), yellow bottom usually means soft or plant growth (you can tell if its vegetation as your graph will say 10 ft deep but yellow line will start at 8 ft or so). lure will come up as yellow or blue ish. I have done a lot of playing with my unit and each time out I learn more. also try split screen view or bottom zoom view to watch and play with your lure on bottom. and you may also have to tweek your sensitivity button as well. for me I fine tune sensitivity so I can barely see lure drop that way it is easier to decipher the size of fish (red mark on graph). plz note, all this info is based on black screen background. I always use black background on the ice, it makes the other colors easier to see and "jump" off the screen.

heavy color?.....u mean red? if so, maybe play with your sensitivity setting and lower it just until u can barely see your lure. im don't have experience with fallen timber in the water but maybe if it is too big/dense your ducer is picking up that more than your lure? you would definitely know when your lure hits the bottom as your line will go slack, wether it has actually hit the bottom/landed on timber/or next to it I have n experience detecting unless like I stated b4, if your graph shows a depth of 10 ft and you loose site of your lure b4 that you are in/behind something or adjust sensitivity on your graph.

after re-reading original post im wondering if your ducer is picking up more of the timber than your lure, if that's the case (or even possible) I would punch a few more holes in immediate area and see if depth or color changes or work with your sensitivity settings, otherwise only thing I can think of is its getting lost in the sonar after level with or lower than the timber.
