Help diagnose a BRAKE issue 2004 Silverado 1/2 ton

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton. This truck came with the factory "soft brake" pedal. Anyway, when driving on compacted snow roads (up north deer season) and even on dry roads, when I press the brake pedal it begins to stop the truck, then the pedal has a clicking (almost like the antilock feeling) and the truck then takes way to long to stop. Not safe, especially on soft/snow compacted roads. The sound/feeling is not a metal on metal squeeling more like the anti-lock clicking with poor lower pressed pedal stopping power. Any ideas.

sounds like "overactive" ABS. Monitoring ABS data with a scan tool should show you which wheel is dropping out first. Typically the ABS sensor mounting are on that wheel has become rusted which opens up the gap (there is a TSB for this). If the wheel bearing is tight than the ABS sensor can be carefully removed from the wheel bearing, the mounting surface cleaned (emery clothe or sand paper can be used to remove the rust), apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the mounting area, reinstall the abs sensor.
