air return height??

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this question has been asked before and doing a quick search, I didn't find anything but I have a split level house and I'm finishing the basement, wondering what the height of the air returns should be. Are they located 8" off the floor or 8" off ceiling height?

I have same style home & in same process

not sure if there is really a "code" for them as much as quantity per sq foot of room that it is in. unless specifically dictated in your building code anywhere. I just bought registers that would coincide "width wise" to the spacing of my studs and started with small holes (4 x 8 ish) that are smaller than registers. that way I could make sure holes are completely covered and if requested to move them up or down for any reason I can do that without having any of the hole in wall exposed. I think I planned for 4" baseboard and just made sure bottom was above that.

.....but to answer your question, im not sure they is a "must" way to do it
