Before & After - Shoulder Mount

Recommended Posts

I got this mount back this spring and thought I would share. If anyone has ever had second thoughts about not getting a shoulder mount, it can still be done.

I shot this buck about 12-13 years ago when I was about 14 or 15. After the shot, the main beam broke off somewhere as he rolled down a long hill into a ravine. At the time my dad did not want to spend money for a mount with a broken rack and he didn't think it could be fixed.

When I picked up my 2011 buck last summer I asked the taxidermist about it and he said he can get a cape and fix it so that I wouldn't even know. I figured it was worth a shot as it was a beautiful 8 point rack just sitting in the garage collecting dust and fading. He added like $25 to the standard cost of the mount for the cape and did not charge me for the antler repair. He found a tine from a matching shed antler and attached part of it and stained the whole rack.

Here is the original picture of the rack after sitting in the garage 10+ years. You can see the break to the main beam right after the g3.

Here are a couple finished pictures. If you don't know the repair is there you cannot even see it.

I wish I could find a picture of it in the woods. This was before we even had a digital camera so I know we have some old 35mm photos of it somewhere but I have not seen them in years.

Thanks guys!

What took so long?

I dropped the rack off around May of last year and picked it up in March of this year. 9-10 months is about right for the taxidermist I use based off his workload. I did not think this could be fixed which is why is sat hung up in the garage for so many years before doing something with it.

Nice, you did real well having it done and out of the garage.

looks like the memory is back alive....priceless

The memories were the driving factor. This was only my 3rd season hunting and my first time hunting without my dad nearby. I bought my first stand that year with money I earned helping out on the farm and chose the location myself (with a little guidance from my dad and uncle). This was the first "big" buck I ever shot. I still remember every detail, I just wish I could find the old picture from after the shot...

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
