Residential Lot zero turn mower

I have been kicking around the idea of getting a Zero Turn mower for mowing my lawn in town. It's not a huge lot by any means and it doesn't take me a lot of time to mow but I have been thinking about trying to cut that time in half if possible. There isn't a lot to mow around which is nice. I am really leaning towards a zero turn mower but I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with a smaller size. I was thinking somewhere between 36"-44" might be realistic for my size lot and also for ease of storage in the garage as well. Just looking to see if anyone can tell me about possible models to look at or any other info that might help me out...Thanks

Jp

I think you get the time savings when you have obstacles and have to mow around them with zero turn mowers. Sounds like you don't have a lot so not sure if you could save 1/2 the mowing time.

I have 1/3 acre town lot myself and was debating a zero turn. I have 3 trees/obstacles and couldn't justify the extra cost of a zero turn. I went from a clutch JD 170 38" deck to a hydro JD (can't remember the #) 42" deck. I saved about 10 minutes but glad I upgraded to a hydro. I can mow faster due to less shifting. Sure would have been nice to "play" with the zero turn though but am glad on the decision I made.

A city lot + zero turn = tired

Are you trying to be like my yuppie neighbors who pull out the $3000 John Deere to mow their 10000 square foot lot. crygrin

Hey hey hey. I was taking a ~60 inch zero turn to a rental I have (3 acres) and stopped by another piece of property I have in town, 1/4 acre. Got the grass cut in 10 minutes. It was awesome.

It is really easy to spend that kind of money when you are talking anything from John Deere grin

And by the way...it's a 15000 square foot mow able lot laugh

I have been just kicking around the idea...I have looked at the Toro's and I have also looked at the smaller Dixons. The smaller snappers seam to sit you up so high and I don't like the feel of that. Just wondering if anyone has experience with it.

I have around 6 trees (depending on where the neighbor feels like mowing that week whistle) flower beds, dog kennel and fire hydrant to mow around. It's not a ton but still I would like to "play" around with the idea a bit longer until I get some other idea in my head that I think I need...

After looking further, the stand on mowers seem to be geared more towards commercial, so they may have a price tag to match.

I say if you want a zero turn, and can afford it, go for it. Who cares if the neighbors think its ridiculous. They are kinda fun.

I have about 3/4 acre lot with really nice grass and i have to cut it every three days. It get old so i finely broke down and bought one last week. Cuts my mowing time down from 1 1/2 hrs to just over forty minutes to cut the grass and weed whip. They are awesome. They are not cheap but i think they are worth it.

Agree they are sweet. I got rid of my walk behind for a rider and I can't stand it. I mow an acre with several trees. I have used zero turns at work for 13 years and my rider will be gone for one next year I don't care what it costs me.

Let me first start by saying I HATE mowing the lawn. The sooner I can be done the better.

In high school I mowed professionaly, mainly with Snapper walk behinds.

When I lived in the country with a big lawn I bought an Exmark 60" walk behind. I could mow the lawn in 20 minutes vs. an hour with a "tractor".

We now live in town on a 1/2 acre lot with a partially wooded area. I can mow it in "minutes" grin

It must have rubbed off on a neighbor down the street because I see he bought something similar smile

I bought my mower for $1600 used from a commercial outfit in Stillwater. It will last me many, many more years. They are designed to mow more grass in one day than I do in one year wink

Not sure if the Dixon's have changed in the last 5 or 10 years. But after a few years of driving them their is a piece that wears out and the leavers no longer match up. For example to go in a straight line the right handle may be all the way forward but the left handle will be half way forward.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
