Any good (mushroom) finds lately?

Recommended Posts

Just the last couple of days I found a mass of what I THOUGHT was chicken of the woods at the base of a cut red oak. After looking at the posts, I thinks it is something else. They are similar in color, but have stems at the bottom and not in a shelf type growth. Any ideas? Did not harvest, nor would I without positive id...

Have no clue what you did find, but do know you did not find a chicken, as there will never be a stem on one; and once you do find one there will be hardly any question in your mind. The season is fading fast though. Literally saw hundreds of lbs of them the last few weeks but nearly all were shot today. Rest assured though...there will be plenty back next year......

Sounds like Jack O' Lanterns...

The only thing I can think of would be a jack-o-lantern. They're orange and have stems. smile

I've never actually seen the glow, alas, but I've read that the bioluminescence is much more pronounced after a rain or when the mushroom is wet. If it's been raining at your place anything like it has been by me, you might have a glowing mushroom on your hands. smile

I might be a bit nuts, but I spent the rainy, cold afternoon putzing around in the woods, looking for hen leftovers, stray honeys, aborted entolomas, and anything else that caught my eye. The woods are still full of lots of mushrooms, many of which I can't identify. The honeys are probably too mature at this point to eat, but the entolomas are primo.

For some reason I have chosen to shack up with a vegetarian, so I made her and me a massaman curry with entolomas replacing the seafood. YUUUMMM.

Well, been a fun end to the season, but am probably packing it in for the year. We went out last night hoping to find a lingering hen or some type of Hericium but just more of the same for edibles and a whole bunch that I have no clue. Mom started tagging along and wanted to keep more than I would have liked, but fun to watch Jr's eyes light up when he gets to tell mom what is good and not. Got to go process this stuff now.....

That's a pretty nice haul for the end of October, PB. I think I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. smile

I was on the way home from Mille Lacs today, and instead of taking the much faster and more direct route home, I wound my way around some backroads, hoping to see some fall colors before everything turns brown, gray and white. Somewhere near Hillman, I saw a HUGE hericium high, high up on a tree. Biggest I've ever seen. I don't know how to figure out whose land it is, but if I knew and the owner was amenable, I'd seriously consider driving back out there tomorrow with a ladder to get that sucker.

Too funny! We were just talking about this the other day. Catch my self all the time driving, not paying attention to driving...but rather what fungus is out there. As mentioned to you, those shaggies pictured above, along with...I suppose....a few hundred others were spotted in the car driving Jr to school. With all the great late season finds this year, sadly, only got one nice Hericium, no doubt one of my favorite; and if I was you might consider bringing a ladder when you go back wink

You got me. By "look for fall colors," I also meant the white of hericiums and oysters as well as the orange of chickens. Speaking of which, they're sure easy to spot when the leaves start falling off; there are lots and lots of big, whitish yellowish mushy lumps on top of dead logs or attached to the side of oak trees between St Cloud and Garrison. smile

I do find it hard to text, fiddle with the GPS, tune the radio and/or change CD's, look for mushrooms, and drive at the same time, so I do my best to avoid looking for mushrooms unless someone else is driving.

In all seriousness, I did stop the truck and look at the "No Trespassing" sign that adorned a post near the hericium-laden tree. No info on it to contact the guy/gal. How do I go about figuring out who owns that chunk of woods? There weren't any houses within miles, either.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
