hi just started using wacky rigs and texas rigged lures. finally got a few to boost my confidence. a few questions i was using mono should i use a braid or fireline to detect bites better. when texas rigging should i jig the lure back or straight retrieve it or both. very new to this any help would be great. also i take it these are more a shallow lure say 10 feet or less.

I prefer flouro carbon line when using those presentations. With T-Rigs I'll let it drop to the bottom. Twitch it a couple times and bring it back in. I rarely, if ever work it all the way back to the boat. You can use the T-rig at any depth range, just use the appropriate size weight.

As for wacky rig. Thats usually done weightless, so it excels in shallow water. If I don't get bit by the time it hits bottoms, Im reeling in and planning my next cast.

I just started using braid again. Then I blood knot on a 2' piece of Flouro. Best of both worlds. Hooks sets are very strong. Bite detection cant get any better. I use 10# braid/flouro on my spinning rig, 30# braid to 12# flouro on my lighter baitcaster, and 80# ZillaBraid only on my heavy baitcaster. If I added a "leader" on that one, it would be 30# Big Game mono most likely.

its called a do nothing bait because you do nothing with it, I learned to wacky rig by casting it drop the rod, reel in the faint slack and watch the line, if its a quick tug and rapid its a panfish if it starts to gradualy move away its a bass reel in the rest of the slack feel the weight and set the hook. Trying to keep a taught line will pendulum the worm bringing it out of the strike zone. This technique has produced me numerous 3-5 pounders and tons of bass all sizes more than any T-rig worm or any other lure its unbelievable, plus using a size 2 egg shaped hook keeps it fairly weedless have not tried the size 2 wacky rig hooks they have a wider gap but I would think they help hooksets better sometimes my hooks are barley on the fish.
