Tilt & Trim Maint/Repair

TruthWalleyes

Question

I posted this in the boat/motor forum, but thought i may get more responses here. Thanks.

I just had a mid 80's evinrude outboard rebuilt. It hasn't ran for about 3 years. I've noticed the Trim & Tilt is really slow and most likely needs the air bleeded out and refilled with oil. Can you give me procedure or adivce on doing this?

Pics below.

Thanks.

I did notice a little oil on the shaft of the cylinder which means a seal is most likely in need of replacing. However, i bet this could be temporarily fixed by adding more oil to the reservoir.

Think a 90w would be appropriate oil for this application?

Extend(tilt up) the piston to it fullest position. Note that sitting on the leg support isn't fullest. Open the Fill hole on the reservoir. The fluid(OMC Tilt & Trim Fluid or Dexron II transmission fluid)level should be at the bottom of the fill hole. Fill and replace the plug. Remove the trim stop rod from the outboard bracket so piston can be retracted all the way in. Operate the trim in to its fullest and then out. Repeat a couple times. Check the fluid level again with the piston fully extended and fill if necessary.

If you added fluid again repeat the trim in and out then check fluid.

Replace the trim stop rod.
