Outboard vs Trolling motor

Recommended Posts

I bought a canoe that came with a 1946-1950 2.5hp johnson, but I'm debating on trying to sell it and getting a trolling motor...They both have pros/cons, outboard:farther on a tank of gas, lighter, faster...Trolling motor: quiet, no gas smell, easier to maneuver, better for fishing...I plan on using it for fishing most of the time, so I'm leaning towards going electric...What thrust would you recommend getting??What have your guys experiences been?? Also if I did sell the outboard what price range do you think I could get for it??? Thanks for any help...

Check the c-list or the big online auction site for the going rates on those motors.

I suppose the size of the electric would probably depend on how far/fast you were planning to go. I've used an small electric with a 14 ft jon boat for years, so I imagine you'd be fine using the 30 lb thrust for your canoe. I'd definitely keep it at 12 volts so you don't need to lug around two batteries.

If the outboard still works well, you might want to hang on to it as a back up . A 30 lbs. thrust electric motor can be had for about $100 new, but the Battery will cost you more and will need to be replaced every few years.
