Thread Wrap Finish

Recommended Posts

I'm almost out of the Flex Coat finish that I've currently been using, and I was just looking online to order some more. I did see that there's a lot of brands to choose from. The flex coat seems to work ok, but I thought I'd try something else to see if I can find a brand that I like a bit more. I have been using it to finish wood handles as well. What brand do you all prefer to use? I also noticed that they offer a "Lite Build", and a "High Build". What are the differences in the two?

Lite build requires a couple coats usually to do the job, while high build is a one and done approach in most cases.

I have used flex coat, U40 Dura Gloss and the American Tackle brand as well. I currently have both U40 and American Tackle that I use because that's what my local supplier had on hand...

It's really a preference thing from what I have found. They all work and will do the job.

I have had better luck especially in cooler weather with the lite builds. There are few brands and they all work well with their own little quirks. I have used flex coat a far amount and it works pretty well. And have been been using classic coat for while and that works well too.

I've been using Flex Coat UV High Build and like it. I started with it and have developed my technique to get great appearance. This wasn't the case when starting. I'm not to interested in trying something new for that reason, although, I did try Threadmaster once and wasn't please with it.

I used flex coat for years with good results.

I have tried Diamond II, U40, Classic Coat and Thread Master.

I would like to try Pro Coat, been hearing some good things.

Thread Master is my go to now.

It seems that each one acts a little different. Some are more tolerant to heat and some are more tolerant to inaccurate measuring.

Light build has its place for me. I like it for ice rods and top coating if the one coat method back fires and I can see thread lines on the guide feet, a light build coat is less bulky and evens everything out.

I have used Diamond II and Flex Coat. They both work good. When I need to put on thin coats I use Flex Coat and thin it out with acetone as Flex coat recommends. No more than 25%. I tryed it on the Diamond and had no problem with it also. It does take longer to dry and may need more coats but I prefere putting on more thin coats than one or two thick coats. It also gives you a little longer working time if needed.
