Accessories for my first Canoe

Recommended Posts

I got my first canoe yesterday, a 17ft Alumacraft with a 2.5hp johnson...I plan using it for fishing quite a bit...So my question, what accessories and mods have you guys made to your canoes to make fishing easier...I plan on adding rod holders and mounting my humminbird to it...Any ideas you guys can give me would be great....Can't wait until July when the ice is gone and can take it out smile

You may want some sort of back rest for the seats. Makes a long day in the canoe a little easier.

They also make storage packs that attach to the under side of a seat. It could make for a nice place to store some boxes of lures and various fishing items. I hate having lose stuff laying around on the bottom of a canoe so I like to be able to put my stuff away when I'm fishing. That way if you do end up tipping someday you don't lose all your fishing gear. It also nice to have everything out of the way if you end up landing a fish and have it flopping around on the bottom of the canoe.

Thats brings up another item. You'll want to have some sort of net with a short handle to land fish. That way you don't have to lean over the side to grab it.

Congrats on the new canoe....I see you live by Duluth, so you're close to the Cloquet River. There are some nice fish in there. whistle

One of the most useful (and also cheapest) things to get is a set of bungee dealie bobs. I know--strange name--but google them. They'll help you strap stuff down to the thwarts (stuff like an extra paddle, fishing rods, ax/saw, etc.) and therefore minimize the loose junk you'll have in the canoe.

Some of those rod holders for storage (not fishing) would be pretty sweet. Look for ways that guys have set up fish finders. Not sure how they do it on canoes, but with kayaks they've worked out some pretty good thru hull ones.
