What Hand Held GPS

mobyfb77

Question

I am in the market for a hand held GPS. Been looking at Garmin 78, 78s. Does anyone have advise on what I should get?

I want one that wll mark waypoints on lakes and beable to load maps. I will be going to Lake Vermilion for the first time. So I want something I can use to find my way. Any thoughts will be very much appreciated.

The only difference in those 2 units you listed is that the s model has sensors built in, one for an electronic compass and the other for barometric altitude, rather than using GPS signals to calculate elevation. If you don't need those 2 options, then save your money and put it towards the lake chip.

The Garmin Upper Midwest Fishing Guide should have you covered on Vermilion, I believe it is in 1 foot contours with this chip.

Garmin has 2 new handheld GPS's hitting the market and will be for sale in a couple days, they are the Oregon 600 and 650 series but these don't float like the 78's do.
