The shift linkage is either out of adjustment or the spring that "switches" gears could be broken. There is a different gear that runs the reverse from the forward. When you pull the lever back it shifts the chain over to the reverse gear.

If you had the opposite scenario where it was stuck in forward, I believe there are external adjustments you can do, but unfortunately I think the only thing you can do is take the cover off and inspect.

First thing would be to remove the drain plug which is inside the tunnel near the track. I think its a 5/8" hex bolt. Inspect that for metal particals.

once fluid is drained then set out to remove the bolts from the cover.

It isnt a big deal, but a good diagram of how everything "should" look would be helpful for comparison. i would think the chain is good because reverse works, I think the mechanism inside to shift it back to forward may be tweaked.

You could certainly do this yourself with a couple beers in an afternoon.
