How close to the weedlines?

I took a friend out who's never been ice fishing before last weekend, so I set up my permanent in the general area of where I've had luck before for crappies and sunnies. When i drilled all the holes I put the camera down and in the left side of the house the 2 holes were all on top of the weeds and the 3 holes on the right side were sandy bottom and maybe 3 ft from the very distinct weedline.

We ended up keeping 7 crappies that night, all from the holes that were off the weeds. I'm thinking about going back to that spot, but how close should i set up to the weeds? Do fish swim tight to the weedline or do they stay off more? Thanks!

Think of that weedline as a crappie highway. You catch those fish as they roam through, they are on the move for a reason, and that reason is to find food. I think the tighter to those weedlines the better.

They may be up in those weeds during the day, especially if the weeds are still green. I'd drill a bunch of holes inside the weeds parallel to the weed edge and check for fish.
