Xbox hard drive

I need to install a larger hard drive for my Xbox. If you use an external, does it slow down the reaction time? Is there a disadvantage of using an external compared to an internal?

If you use an eternal, what do you need to do to format it to the Xbox? I just tried plugging in an external I had laying around here, and the Xbox didnt recognize it in the storage section.

My buddy has an external and loves it, keeps telling me to get one, I don't game like he does so the standard one that came with it has done me fine.

How to install it, I don't know, I am sure a google or similar search would get you the answers though

scott what version xbox do you have, i have a spare HD laying around.

It is the newer version, but I did get a external to work, I just had to make a fat32 partition to the hard drive. It is only using 32gig, but the one in the xbox is only a 4gig, so it should keep me good for awhile. I see no difference in game play using an external, at least so far.
