decoy sizes

Do most of you tend to use different size decoys in your spreads, or do you like to stick with one size, etc Mags, Super Mags, standard? Just curious. Thanks

Most of my deke's are standard size. I do have some magnums mixed in, but for no particular reason. They are just decoys I found on the lake or picked up cheap here and there. Everybody has their own preferences and belief's. My personal beliefs are with ducks it doesnt make a difference in the size of the decoys. Numbers do make a difference when the flocks your trying to call in are larger, and small groups come in without a problem with a huge spread. Ducks have great eyesight and dont have a problem seeeing your spread. A better way to draw more attention is by spinning wing decoys, one of these will provide more of a visual than an entire spread of decoys, and creates movement which is especially important on calm days.

The only way I could see the need for super mags is if huge flocks of ducks are all flying the same altitude of passenger jets ... when those particular flocks decide to come back down to earth it usually just about sunset and time to rest for the night. They will lock, sway, and circle a few times to drop elevation.. but by this time they can see your standard spread of decoys the same as any other spread .. and they usually land where they see other birds landing, or where theres the most birds (largest spread)of decoys ... that is if they dont decide to land in the middle of the lake anyway.

I would use whatever your most confident with weather it would be volkswagon size decoys, or standard. Just remember you need to load these decoys every trip and the bigger they are the more they weigh, and more room they take ... at the same time it makes a good excuse to buy a bigger duck boat.

I use Mag mallards....

But when mixing in different species I feel that it is key to have a defference in size.....it just shows up better to the birds...i feel...all my other species are standards...(Woodies, Pintail, Ringbills, ad Teal) Cept for my big water diver spread which is all Magnum Herters.
