I bought one and can't find in the instructions anywhere how you put on that little metal clip deal to be able to make the camera view to the sides instead of just straight down. I'm sure it's probably fairly simple but I'm a bit confused. Any suggestions?

Don't have mine in front of me but just slide the ring around the lens of camera (may have to pull the ring open a little) and then slide cord into hook. It can be tricky to get the ring around the camera part as it is a tight fit. Hope that helps.

I struggled with it too.

Try putting the ring on from the back of the camera.

First over the cord, then work the ring up the back, the taper on the back of the camera helps open up the ring, finally work it up to the slot by the front lense.
