Pike spinning reels

Recommended Posts

The pfleuger president gets the job done for me with a little more green left in my wallet than other reels I was looking at. There are some larger presidents that hold plenty of line with more than enough drag for a spinning setup.

There are lots of good choices out there. I would also take into consideration what rod you will be using, and the different weights you'll be tossing with it. I would suggest going some where that has a good selection of reels( and take your rod) to find what works for you. smile

There are dozens of great reels available in your price range. The really good news is that they're all overbuilt, too.

A 2500 series will definitely work, but if I was looking for a pike-specific reel, I'd move up to a 3000 (aka 30) model. The larger spools on these tools will give you longer casts, faster retrieves, and the ability to move up and down between line sizes. They also balance a bit better on 7ft rods--which allow you to use a wider range of lures. However, go with what feels comfortable.

After many years on the job I've come to the firm belief that $100.00, or so, buys all the features/benefits you'd ever actually experience on the water. Specifically, Penn Battles and Pflueger Supremes are bulletproof at $100.00.

P.S., I love my two Daiwa SS's, but after using newer technologies, their lack of instant anti reverse is a minor, but persistent, bugaboo.

Lot's of great reels out there and a wide variety to choose from. I have three boys 6,8 and 10 that love to fish and do it well. They however are hard on rods and reels. Their reels end up in the sand and they bend rod guides and snap tips. While they have gotten better I just couldn't justify or afford spending too much on a rig. While you are fishing for reel advice I am a huge advocate of making sure to use the right line. I am cheap with some of the rods and reels but I'll always have good line on my rigs. My boys have landed 36 inch pike, 29 inch walleyes and 22 inch largemouths and cheap combo spinning rods spooled with Powerpro. There are a lot of good lines out there but for throwing and trolling I love this line (not a paid advertisement). Good luck.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
