Finding This Particular Tip-up - Where?

I went to Cabelas and Fleet this weekend to find one and they do not carry them at all. Being as I brought it up....I have a concern with how they appear to work. What happens if you have a spot of frozen line, or just a bit of snag. Is it possible that the fish is going to pull your pole down the hole? Whith a tip-up, the line is in the water and keeps it from freezing, which is the true genious behind the device.

This style of "tip up" works great when its not cold enough for the hole to freeze over or if you can use it inside your house where its warmer and can keep the hole open. You need the line to be able to flow freely through the hole.

It allows you to use your own rod and reel to fight the fish rather than hand over hand with traditional tipups.

You simply have the bail on your reel open, or if your using a baitcaster type reel have the reel on free spool. No worries about the rod and reel being dragged down the hole.

Last, I would suggest you review and look into the model made by "HT".

I have started to use these the last few years and they are great. a little more cumbersome to carry around because you need the base unit as well as the rod and reel set ups - but worth it.
