Did anyone else read in the star trib that they have decided to go with the early start this year. I think this is gonna suck. What do you guys think

that was my reaction too. too hot and takes away from tradition- seems too early. i saw some ducklings today that looked like they would barely be able to fly by sept. 21, let alone have the plumage. i will enjoy bagging more woodducks and BWT though.....that's what i see the most of around opener anyways.

I don't think on week will make a noticable difference in the amount of ducks flying or not. Other than the last few years most people are sitting in their living rooms for at least the last week of the season just wishing the season started a little earlier so they wouldn't be froze out in the end. At least we still have 60 days, I don't care when they are!

As long as we DO get 60 days it would be somewhat ok, but I still think this is a BIG mistake. Many ducks will not even be in plumage enough to distinguish hens from drakes. I think this one is going to come back and bite us in the behind with an increased total of susies being taken. People have been trying for years to get a special "Teal Season", well, they have basically accomplished getting one. Hope the fair weather hunters have a fun time swatting mosquitoes and getting a tan. I for one will probably be out fishing somewhere, waiting for the real duck weather to get here!!
More to come later after I get REALLY worked up...lol

Yeah, agreed Gull, if we dont get out 60 day season this year I will be really p.o.ed. I just dont get it, them dam southern boys get three months to kill ducks and we get a month and a half????

Come on there has to be something wrong with this, we produce em and they shoot em??? I am very touchy on the whole northern seasons vs. southern seasons, so if this takes off you can expect long, explict post from this Yankee. I beleive that regs should be set as a whole or even by flyaways, not state by state. After all they are Federal Game!?!?

Before you get all uptight there Bemidj, I did some research because I did not think that they could hunt for that long. This is what I found-
Last season, Louisiana, which is THE southern duck state, had a split season. The first split which ran from November 13 - November 28, was considerd their early teal season. The 2nd Split, which was their regular season ran from December 11 - January 23. This equaled 60 days, same as us.
All states within the central flyway must structure their seasons according to the frame work set forth. How they split them up is up to each individual state. This is why there was such a stink last year when some of these states tried to get an extention on their seasons. This would have put them over their 60 day limit.
Not trying to bash ya, but just a little FYI.

Does anyone know if there will be a split season if season opens on the 21st? Or when a split would be?

I'm guessing a 60 day season would have the split after 30 days, and a 45 day season would have a split after about three weeks, but I'm not sure. I usually take the middle week of October off for duck hunting, but now I don't know when to take my vacation :-(

Arkansas- Split season- Nov. 17 to Dec. 20, Dec. 26 to Jan. 20 wich equals 60 days, same as us.

Texas on the other hand is governed by the Central Flyway Council that has a different date framework than the Mississippi Flyway. They recieved 74 days last year.

"Them dam southern boys"? "We produce them and they shoot them?" Give me a break. And when did 60 days come to be known as 3 months? Using our "southern math" it only equates to 2. I'm not trying to continue an argument or anything like that, although past experience tells me there will be repercussions, but waterfowlers in the south are not the ones to be [PoorWordUsage]ed at, it's your own state's lawmakers. Venting "long, explicit posts" on this forum isn't going to do anything to help your plight. Send the message to your elected officials.

why don't some of you guys do what the guys in my group do. We shoot them here and then pack our bags on New Years Eve day and go to Ole Arkie for a week of hot shootin and if they aren't there we move to Texas. When you get clear to Arkansas Texas isn't that far!
Alls you have to do is try to advertise Trade hunts on web sites such as Waterfowler.com and let it take care of the rest
We got guys from both Arkansas and Texas that come up here to hunt Deer and Pheasants. Set them up with the land and they stay in a hotel and we turn around and do the same down there. No guide fees just a lot of fun and one person can do this for as little as $500 if the proper arrangements are made. Try it you will like it!

All i can say is iam done hunting ducks. Thats what October was all about. Night fishing Walleyes and sitting in the blind on a crisp October morning. There's way too many boats on the water in September. And i don't get this take a youth hunting day. I have nothing against taking kids hunting, but i don't see the point of getting them out early. I have no problems with taking my 13 year old nephew out on opener. I understand the DNR want's to get more people out, but this is not the way to go about doing it. Your going to pummel the local birds to death and wait over a month for the migrates to come in. You want more people and kids hunting? Keep the old dates, lower the limit to 3,and lift the 4pm ban. $.02
