My new Oregon should be here in a few days and I was all jacked up to check out garmins basecamp but after downloading it found out I have the osx 10.5.8 and basecamp requires 10.6 or newer. Am I screwed if I don't get a new computer? Or is there something I can do?

I don't think you'd need to get a new Mac....just update osx to 10.6 or higher.

If I were you, I'd try running it and see if it works or not...won't hurt nothing.

I have only used it on windows machines but have never had an issue. I don't think you need a new computer but you may have to upgrade your operating system.

One option is to download virtual box by Oracle and you can run an OS virtually on top of another. Say you are running Windows 7 now. You can install a copy of the mac version you need and then have both at the same time, if you didn't want to upgrade your entire OS and reinstall everything

OS X upgrades have become fairly inexpensive lately. Not sure about 10.5 to 10.6, tho. I am at Mac OS X 10.8.2 and using BaseCamp 4.0.4.
