Selling a shotgun Q's.

Recommended Posts

I've never sold a gun before, so i really do not know where to start.

Assuming I take it to the big C or FF to resell, is there anything I need to do/know before bringing the gun in? Do Shotguns hold resale value well? Am I personally ably to sell it to a 3rd party (with background checks needed, I'm not sure i want to do this)?

I have a few shotguns and figure I really only 'need' 2.

Any thoughts/advice would be helpful

Thanks

I wouldn't touch this on your own and would direct you to a licensed FFL dealer to manage the transaction. There are many in the area and most would charge a nominal fee $20 or so to manage the transaction. Perform a Google search of "ffl mn" for a listing of FFL holders near you.

Good luck!

Some thoughts. I'm sure there are more and better ones to come.

1. You might want to do some online research to get an idea of what your shotgun is worth.

2. If there is one nearby, take it to a pawn shop to see what they offer just for an idea. (Decline their offer).

3. There are gun shops that will sell it for a percentage of the price, they should know what it's worth.

4. If you sell it yourself I would, for your own protection, take a couple of photos and a close up photo of the serial number and write up a bill of sale. Anyone wanting to buy it should sign the bill of sale. (Keep it for ever). Ask for a photo ID, anyone who is not trying to hide something shouldn't object and don't sell to a minor.

5. Someone else with more recent experience will have to answer the background question. I don't think it's required for a private sale and you don't have the means to do so anyhow.

6. I traded a rifle last year at the big C and it was easy. They ran the stolen checks, inspected it and made a very fair offer.

I have sold shotguns to private parties in the past. I make a bill of sale including the following information:

Gun make

Gun model

Gun serial #

Statement that I,XXX, sold the above gun to XXXX.

Sign, date and print names for each party.

Address and Phone # of both parties.

Drivers' license of buyer.

Haven't had problems with anyone filling this out.

I would not hesitate to sell the guns privately, but, I would probably do it more through word of mouth than anything else. I would go on Gunbroker.com and see what the guns are bringing on their HSOforum. If you decide to trade them in, you should try and get 80% of the retail value of the gun. If you see a gun just like yours on the used gun rack for $300, you should expect to get somewhere around $240 for it. If its a lot less, I wouldn't trade it in. Sometimes I have done real well trading, other times I have walked back out the store with them.

I wouldn't have much of a problem selling it privately, but I wouldn't exactly advertise it in classifieds either. You could try and sell them on here or on armslist. Shotgunworld.com also sells quite a few guns privately. You could also run the transaction through an FFL dealer for a small fee.

If someone has a permit to purchase or permit to carry I would have no issue selling it to them. It is legal to sell it to a person so lang as you dont have reason to believe they are a felon. All you need to do to protect yourself is get their information off of their drivers license and call local law enforcement with the serial number of the fire arm and their info.
