Why not write a complaint letter to Amazon? Worst they can say is "Sorry, nothing we can do.", which leaves you no worse off than you are now.

There are many examples of complaint letters on the Internet that you can pattern after.

The essence is to clearly state your problem, butter them up a bit with why you chose to get that item from them, tell them you're disappointed with the product and what you'd like them to do, and then ask for their help to restore your faith in their product and company.

Thing you don't want to do is send them a nastygram telling them what a POS the item is and that you'll never buy from them again.

Have a hard time envisioning what the kids might have done to make the battery that way. About all I can come up with is many, many cycles just wore it out and or possibly improper charger used.

FWIW, I don't believe they can not honor warranty even if you didn't register it (assuming for discussion it's in warranty). You might have to prove date of purchase though or, worst case, maybe they'd use the serial number to determine date of build or shipment and start from there.

If you bought it from Amazon they likely automatically registered it in your name. Amazon is clearly one of the best service organizations around and they will TRY to make you happy. Personally, I think the kids have scrambled something in the Fire and the use of multiple chargers would be enough to drive any device nuts.

Call or otherwise contact Amazon. Simply explain what is going on. No talk...just tell them and mention the kids. They will bend over backward to make you happy.

Then, in the future use the proper equipment in the proper sequence. The Fire is a marvelous device and Amazon is an aware winning merchandiser.

As an engineer in the manufacturing industry, I would suggest you send in a complaint if purely to help the manufacturer improve the product. A lot of our customer complaints get forwarded on to me so that I can help improve the issues that our customers are seeing. If nobody complained about our products we would think they are all working perfectly with no need for improvement!! Most engineers and product developers take product complaints very seriously.

One of the worst things you can do to these devices is to never let them fully charge before pulling them off and discharging them. I know the new style batteries are not supposed to have that kind of memory, but that is bunk. We see it in laptops all the time where users don't let them charge and then drain them right back down.

The other problem is deep discharge. No battery thrives on repetitive deep discharge "run it until dead" cycles. This is very hard on ALL battery types.

Also, while storage doesn't seem to be an issue here, lithium-ion battery are common in today's devices and they should be stored at roughly 40% charge.
