One Man Shack

Hey Guys,

I have decided I'd like to purchase a one man shack for this winter. I have a pop up shack for when I bring someone else out but I fish a decent amount of the time by myself so a one man shack would be nice! I was doing some research and I was mainly looking at the size of the shacks when they're folded up. As I drive a car I was hoping to find one that would fit inside. I was really eyeing up the Jason Mitchell Pro Thermal shack because of it's large fishable area, comfortable seat, and thermal material but it appears to be between 22"-24" tall when folded up and I don't think that will work in my trunk. So I was looking for a few tips from the experienced field here about what shacks they have had good experience with and if anyone has had to transport these in cars as well.

I'm no expert, but I do fish exclusively out of a one man shack and I also transport it in a very small space.

I run the Frabil recon DLX. I removed the bench seat that came with it, to save some more space. I think it's around 18-20in or so (not exact measurements by a mile), but I did save a few inches by doing this.

I think the best option for this type of deal is look for one where you can remove the seat while transporting....this saves a great deal of space.

The other option, is can you attach one of those quick hitch baskets to the back of your car? There are some threads on here about guys using them on 4-wheelers, but the concept would hold on a vehicle as well. I've thought of doing this myself to gain transportation space in my vehicle so I can use a larger shack.

I have the JM Pro Thermal, but I have a pickup with a topper so I cannot say as for the use with a car. I will say though that I love the shack. I have added a dark cloth sheeting to the top so site fishings is easier on a bright sunny day. other than that, I love the shack, quick easy and the add on for the JM series are great!

I think you may have a hard time fitting it into a trunk. The trunk may be tall enough to hold it but getting it in will be different. You'll probably have to slide it in and turn it once it's in. So you have to think it will be going in the trunk at an angle making it harder to get in. I have a clam scout. I'll try and slide it in to my chevy impala trunk tomorrow and see what happens. The impala trunk is huge.

MN BassFisher,

what model car do you have? Does the car have a reciever hitch. I use a cargo carrier on the back of my Tahoe (big enough to put a one man in but I choose not to because I don't want all that snow melting in the truck). I did this with my old blazer also. I would have done this when I had my Cavalier but during the time I had that I stopped ice fishing because of where I was living at the time. If your car has a hitch I would look at this as a possible option. the thing to remember is that if you do this make sure the carrier sits away from the tail pipe. it will melt your sled if it is to close.

here is the carrier when I had it on the blazer. I will be using it this season on the Tahoe. you could do something like this if you have a hitch on the car.

I also use a back rack thing like Brad B has. I have a trailblazer but still use that to haul my house and auger. That way the inside of my truck doesn't stink like gas and get all filthy from the sled bottom. I either leave my gear in the sled or toss it in the back. That would be the way to go on a car to. Keep the dirty stinky stuff outside and put the fragile valuable stuff in the trunk. I got mine off cray list cheap.

Oh that is a good idea! I had never thought about that, unfortunately my car does not have a hitch. From the sounds and after talking to a couple people, I think the JM shack might fit into my trunk with the seats down. I'm going to swing by and see if TBro's has one set up and see if it would be 100% possible. If so, I'm going to pull the trigger.
