Installing Slate tiles without Grout

Hello; I am going to build a hearthpad for my new propane stove using slate tiles 12" x 12" and would like to just cement them in with no grout (and no spaces). The sample at Menards was not grouted and it looked fine and I thought it would be easier to do it that way. The salesperson said that would be okay. I thought this should work as the space will be only about 36" x 36" with some angles in front, so it's not like I'm doing a large kitchen floor. The stove will be setting on most of the hearthpad as well. Any thoughts? Thanks...Jim

I don't know why it wouldn't work as long as you don't mind the thin gaps between tiles; they will catch dirt. I would lay out the tile just to see how close you can get them. You may find that there is more variation in tile size than the display led you to believe. The worse that could happen is that you have to grout it after all and it still looks good. If you do have to end up grouting, be sure to do a lot of research on it. I may be wrong, but it seems to me slate is one of the materials that requires some extra preparation.

I will go ahead and cement in the tiles without grout. It's just a small piece and yes, they are kind of uneven, but being they won't be walked on I think they will look fine...kind of add to the rustic look a bit. I sure do like the slate. I will seal them too. Thanks for the info. Jim
