fishin
Hello everyone, I have a small problem. I bought a 1986 Polaris Indy Trail with a 488 air cooled motor from a coworker. The motor was in pieces so I put it back together with 2 new pistons. The motor has been bored .020" over and the heads have possibly been shaved from what I was told. I am having problems with it idling. It will almost constantly vary from about 1800 to 3200 rpm. It is also using way to much gas. It has a lot of power and runs fine once your moving. I am not sure what to check to find the cause of the problem. I am thinking the carbs need adjusting but I am unsure how to adjust them with the motor not being to original specs. I am hoping someone could give me some advice, I would really apprieciate it.
Guest
fishingdmYou might want to check the idle jets on the carbs.anything with the carbs could mean couple different things, like something stuck in the jets, main and idle, even the float bowl??? If you are getting to much fuel another thing is the choke could be sticking?? If you don't know how to do that check with a local shop person and they can probably help you out. Guest
It could be air leaking into the crankcase which is leaning out the mixture, and causing the changing idle speeds. As long as the air leak isn't too large, you may not notice it while under moderate to heavy throttle. But it could also cause the engine to run really lean, which could be fatal. fishin
Well, yesterday checked and re-torqued all of the engine fastners. I then adjusted the choke cables and idle speed screws and I was able to get the idle to be more consistent and I rode it for about 12 miles after doing that, and it sucked down 3/8 of a tank of gas. I'm thinking I should be getting better gas mileage than that. Thanks for the help.
