Hey guys, I am looking into doing a DIY hunt by Glenwood Springs. Area 34.

Is this a good area? What can I expect in this area? Is it crowded? Should I see elk there?

It will probably be a second season rifle hunt but maybe a bowhunt in sept.

I have relatives by there so that is why I am looking at this area.

Thanks for any replies.

I lived out there for about 8 years. I would not do Glenwood Springs. Not a high nunmber of elk and not a lot of big bulls. Check out the Gore Range up around Kremling or down in the Westcliff area. High numbers in both areas

We got two bulls from 5 guys. We were camped North of Baxter peak. We hunted areas on all sides of baxter, blue lake, cowcamp, monument, and grizzly gorge. I could have shot one more small bull that had one brow tine over 5 inches. I didn't know that rule at the time.

I'm not sure strategy wise the best way to hunt them. We spent a good amount of time on fresh tracks chasing them. It was exhausting. We did a couple of drives and managed to cover a ridge very well with all of us and then we saw mostly bulls and a couple of cows with no angles for a clean shot.

I hope you are doing well!

Thanks for the report, we didn't do as well. 0 for 2.

We ended up hunting area 43 south of town, Stony ridge area. I passed two smaller bulls opening day and only saw cows the rest of the week. Did pretty much as you said looking for sign and small drives. Brutal travel in that area even with 4 wheelers.
