Showdown in summer

I have a showdown and a canoe, never mixed the two, I did just pick up the Lowrance x67c that I think will work a lot better and I plan on bringing up to the BWCA this fall.

The limit of the showdown is that it only shows a particular moment in time, where a sonar with a graph will better show drops and such. plus the showdown does not do a very good job of showing the diferance between weeds and soft bottom.

I would say go and try it on local lakes befor your trip. bwca.com has some really good recourses too.

If it is flat calm and no movement it will work, other than that leave it home. I tried it on open water last fall and ended up calling marcum because i thought the unit was broke. Got some technical response that if i was smarter would have understood better....something about too focussed cone angle and some other bigger words. Regardless, this unit is designed to work properly right on top of your set up......suppose it is what makes it work so well on the ice....but not so good on open water. Have fun on your trip!

Took mine to the bwca and it worked great for me then I bought the showdown troller and took that the next year and it worked just as well but was much, much lighter and compact. If fishing from the back of the canoe put the tranducer the length of your rod in front of you and that way you can see your jig and the fish just like ice fishing.

I've used my troller through an aluminum boat but it would only shoot through if there was water in the bottom of the boat. Last year in the canoe and kayak forum there was a pretty long link on this subject. If you have a kevlar canoe it works very well but as the gauge of your aluminum canoe goes up the harder it is to shoot through the hull.

Interesting...not saying I do not believe you, but I could only read bottom and not track my lure. How deep were you? Personally, was confused by the explanation and could not understand how the lure could be out of the 30 degree target area ..... did just hang it over the side of the boat though.....cant imagine that would make a difference.

I just hung mine over the edge (tranducer won't shoot through Royalex) jiged my line right next to the tranducer. No reason it wouldn't work, the showdown doesn't know if your in a canoe or on ice. It was extremely calm on the lake and was using a 3/8 jig. I could see not being able to see your jig if you had any kind of drift going on because the jig could move out of the cone angle. And if I rember right jigging right next to the transducer is key just like ice fishing.

I use my showdown in the kayak alot in the summer just like you would icefishing, infact I like to use a 32inch icerod. A flasher would work fine also. The key is slowing your drift/not moving much and or using a heavier jig so it stays in the cone.

I really like the Troller for this when space or portages are an issue. cool
