Old Traps

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna get back into trapping this year and as I was digging out some of my old traps they are really rusty and don't move as they used to. So is there anything I can do to them to help bring them back to life? Or should I just invest in new ones?

It depends the first thing I would do is soak them in a 5o -50 solution of white vinegar and water for a day or two and then rinse. They will get a light layer of rust after drying and you can dye or dip them then if you want or do nothing.

I don't know what kind of traps you are talking about but you can buy new springs for coilspring traps and helper springs for long springs. If your traps are really pitted bad it may not be worth fixing them.

It's amazing what the 50/50 solution will do for a rusty trap. Put a nail between the jaws before you put them in the solution to get the majority of the jaws clean. I know MTP and others sell new springs if you need those too.
