Packable spinning rod

PFUNK

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a spinning rod that can be used for back country camping/fishing trips in Montana. Looking for a 3 or 4 piece rod that can be broken down and stored in a piece of PVC tubing and lashed to my pack while hiking. Light or medium light power and 5'6" or 6' long is what I had in mind. If anybody has one that they like, I would love to hear about it. Hoping I can spend around $50 or less and still get a decent rod. Thanks for any advice.

Have you looked at the Shakespeare rods that come in a plastic case? I know a few folks out in CO that have used them and said they worked. Not the best rod and reel combo in the world but they are light, small and packable.

Be sure to check out the selection at the BIG stores in Rogers or Owatonna. Have carried some of their pack-rods, in various weights, to many far flung places. Don't know about prices but if you are expecting to get a rod, reel etc. for less than $50 you are asking a big much don't you think?

At any rate: I've always been surprised by the quality of some of their spin and fly rods.

I was hoping to get just the rod for $50 or less. Already have reels that I can put on it. Unfortunately I am out in Montana and the closest Cabela's is a few hour drive. Thanks for the input so far. I'll be sure to check into those that were mentioned.

The Walmarts has a Daiwa Minicast kit. $43. If you have one near where you are (where isn't there a walmart), you can check if they have them available online before you drive there.

They also have this "R2F 7' Telescoping SW/AS Combo with Bag". I am sure it's not the best quality but it looks like it'll get you fishing and packable

St.Croix has some nice travel rods in their Triumph line.

Model Length Power Action PCS Line Weight Lure Weight Rod Weight Handle Price

TRS56ULF4 5'6" UL Fast 4 2 - 6 1/32 - 3/16 2.7 1 $ 100

TRS60LF4 6' L Fast 4 4 - 8 1/16 - 5/16 3.5 2 $ 100

TRS66MLF4 6'6" ML Fast 4 4 - 10 1/8 - 1/2 4.7 4 $ 110

TRS66MF4 6'6" M Fast 4 6 - 12 1/4 - 5/8 4.9 4 $ 110

I know they are twice the price as your looking to spend, but I'm sure they would be a little more durable and give you a better selection on rod weight and length.

Just get one of these:

Ha! That's pretty funny. I remember my old man having one of those laying around when I was just a little tike. I wonder if he still has that thing.
