2012 Anterless deer tags

Recommended Posts

I agree with both you guys. Glad they trimmed back the tags. Guys will think about it a little more when they have to buy one for $12 vs getting 3 free and as many more as you want for $2.

If we were swimming in deer, I would have no qualms about having more doe tags. But you can't do it year after year after year. Have it one year and then stop. Eventually it's going to take it's toll. The first year a guy might wait for nice doe, but eventually you get more smaller/yearling types taken and many of those are little bucks. That doesn't help the next crop of potential good bucks.

I just hope they change from a $2 to a $12 tag in future herd control hunts. From the onset that would have helped greatly. We wouldn’t be sitting here today talking about it.

Sad part is once the herd gets back up there a lot of people that will return to the glory days of whacking and stacking. Since 2000 I am still stuck only using both hands to count the deer I have taking, this year I might get to start using my toes. But with two kids coming up and one just entering his deer hunting career I will be even pickier.

That’s classic............ I run into it all the time, people complaining that there are no bucks, or size to any bucks. But they shoot nubbins like crazy. My Dad and Brother, brothers father inlaw.

Exact point why all male deer need to be tagged as a buck. Due away with the 3" or bigger. If its got male plumbing your buck tag goes on it. That will slow down some lead going down range. Make evidence of sex a requirement when registering deer. Some numbers say 50% of fawns harvested are males. Let 25% get through till next season, some get another year equals wow for WI in a couple of years. Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with smaller bucks, just nubbins getting taking. I like all bucks, little and big. But the chance for a few extra to get an added year or two. I don’t down grade or question anyone for what they shoot but, just don’t get the nubby’s.

Be nice if I could take my annual doe with my regular tag. Guess if I want to let the bucks go for you guys, I'll have to buy another $20 tag. Because I guess my $160 isn't good enough frown

Or I'll just have to shoot a little buck, cause that's what they want I guess. crazy

(my unit went from Herd Control to Regular)

You can shoot a little buck. Read my post. I have no problem with that. I am not a horn porn fanatic that questions why people would shoot little bucks. Nor would I question or complain to other people about what other people harvest. Big or little their all cool and all have a story to tell behind the hunt. I just would like to see some more nubbins make it an extra year.

Hence sex specific tags. No more of this 3" and under it’s an antlerless tag. Boys are boys, girls are girls.

What unit you hunt? DMU 10 here.

I guess I don't see the $160 or $20 for a bonus tag as that out of line. Other states are much higher than that.

I usually hunt in 8 but sometimes go into 10 and 11. There has been declining numbers in these units for about the last 4 years.

The DNR used to be all about shooting little bucks then it turned into shooting pretty much everything.

I wouldn't even be opposed to going back to hunters choice permit. A buck or doe, one tag. In those years you hunted bucks until the end of the season and then if you hadn't had any luck you tried to fill it with whatever you had a chance at.

The age structure is very poor in our areas. The larger bucks aged are only going to be 3.5 years old. Now I don't need a booner behind every tree, but it would be nice to have a crack at a decent rack buck a little more frequently. I'd honestly like to see a premium put on smaller bucks. If you get a hunters choice, anything is good. Bonus, does only. A nubbin fills your buck tag. If you want a general tag, 4 on side before it's legal. It will never happen but I think we'd be suprised what would be roaming around in a few years.

I didn't mean to sound like you're a horn guy. I actually like taking does. I like the idea of hunters choice, buck or doe with the main tag. Then if I just want 1 doe, I don't have to get a "bonus". I hunt #21 and occasionally #81.

I am ecstatic that they finally have done this... I hunt in unit 10 and in the last 5 years have watched the herd get destroyed by itchy trigger fingers (and the wolves which I'm thankful there's a season for)... I can still remember a horror I saw at a gas station in Gburg 3 years ago 2 guys bragging because their 5x8 trailer was stacked to the top at least 10 deer and almost all FAWNS... I got no problem with filling the freezer but there's gotta be a point when you say enough is enough

I'm in unit 16 directly below 10 and I am happy for it we have 2 properties in unit 16 and one has taken a huge hit! And the other has gone down but there are still quit a few deer but I'll see this year because last opener they pounded them the guy at the gas station said that weekend they registered more deer than arachery season last year gun and last years bow so I have yet to check my cameras so I can't say how much of one that's taken but what may contribute to it is the other store probly four miles away stopped registering deer but I think that was 2 years ago
