Wet Spring/ Dry Summer!

Recommended Posts

Well after that soaker of a spring weve been in big time drought for the past 3 weeks or so. Corn and beans a looking great but I was starting to get a little worried with the lack of rain. Last night an isolated shower came over and dumped a 1/2 to 3/4 inch in about 30 minutes! That should REALLY help!

2 weeks and I think it will be time to get on the oats and rape etc. Whats anyone elses plan? Anyone else need to do the "rain dance"?

Seems to have been the routine the last few years. Wet spring, dry summer, avg. fall.

We've been fortunate when we put in our fall plots. Though it has been unseasonably dry each of the last 3 years, we get a timely shower or two to keep the plants growing. the cool nights by the end of Aug, really help the plants to regenrate each day.

Our plan is mid - Aug planting of turnip, rape and oats blend. Had super luck with this mix last fall. I am thinking of throwing in a few pounds of Kale this year to try and carry some green food well into december...

Good Luck!

Ken

Its sure been dry. My clover's been dormant for 3 weeks now. The egyptian wheat screen has grown to 5' in 40 days and the buckwheat flowered a week ago. The plan is to disc in the bw next weekend and plant half the plot in a turnip/rape/radish mix and the other half in buckwheat/peas. At the end of August, I'll disc in the bw/peas and plant a winter rye/clover/radish/peas mix. I'll join the rain dance for sure.
