Super Leech

Recommended Posts

I saw this new lure called a "super leech" which is just a long bunny fur lure with a treble hook. I want to try and make one because they are near $40 each to buy. I have not had much experience with lure making. I once hammered an oval piece of steel with a ball-peen hammer, put a hook on it and called it a spoon, but I have never tied a fly.grin I'm thinking of making it about 10" long out of Cortland toothy critter 35# steel leader material. Basically I am going to cut a 10" piece and attach a treble to one end, and a swivel to the other. The part I need help with is the body. Would feathers work, or is fur better? How do I tie fur along a leader; one long chunk of feather/fur, or a bunch of smaller ones along its length? Also some basics on how you tie fur to the shaft would be nice. It looks like most lures with fur are just attached by wrapping thread around a bunch of times and maybe some glue to hold it? Any help is appreciated.

That a nice $28.79 peice of fur grin

It is exactly what I want this year with the high weeds. I can glide it right over the tops for lazy pike that wont take top water.

Use a thread called GSP200. You can wrap it very, very tightly without it breaking. For my bunny flies, I just shave a quarter inch of fur off and throw a couple loose wraps over the fur near where you ended your shave. Position your fur where you want it then throw a line of wraps half way down your shaved portion. Give a dab of super-glue on those wraps and fold that last half of the shaved portion over it and tightly wrap that. From there, you can just throw wraps over the fur to make it look nice. Once it sets, it isn't going anywhere.

In the back end, just push the fur back and throw a couple tight wraps under the fur. If you do it right, you can tell it's even tied in.
