Alaskan cruise - best fishing opportunities

Recommended Posts

Doing an Alaskan cruise during the last week of August from Seward down to Vancouver. Stops are:

Juneau, Alaska;

Skagway, Alaska;

Icy Strait Point, Alaska;

Ketchikan, Alaska.

We'd like to do some fishing but have no idea what the best opportunity and value is along the way so does anyone have advice? Leaning towards salmon fishing somewhere, but could do halibut or something else if that would be better.

Any ideas/tips? River/ocean fishing? Outfitter advice?

Thanks in advance

Best of luck:) Problem with fishing from a cruise ship (well, not exactly FROM a cruise ship, that would just be silly:) is thier shore time doesn't match up well with most charter days.

My brother did try last year while on a cruise; he fished twice, Sitka and Ketchikan I think, and did poorly. My perception is that the cruise lines work with marginal charter outfitters, or at best use decent operators but thwart thier good efforts with 9 am departures and such. Add to that that your calender timing likely won't be just right, as most ports do have a somewhat narrow window of prime time.

Personally, I'd just enjoy the cruise, maybe pack a travel rod to try some impromptue shore fishing if the opportunity presents itself, and schedule a fishing trip for a later date.

I'll be interested to hear if you get some positive comments/experiences on this...
