Dog in the boat?

I enjoy my dogs in the boat and they behave well, but for what its worth I enjoy the time in the field with them even more. Its part of our weekly/daily routine to work in the field, plant birds and then hunt hard come fall.

For me the risk out weighs the reward. Its just too much for me to risk if one or both of my dogs were to go down with an injury. I would just rather play it safe than sorry because I would be devastated (and so would the dog) if I had to leave a dog behind when it comes time to chase birds.

My chocolate lab now almost 4yrs old hears the word boat and shes in it before we leave the drive way and ready for fishing ,hunting or what ever the boat is involeved in.

She has been in my my since she was a 4 month old pup and that was a 16 vee hull with a beavertail on it and on the opeing morning of youth water fowl season.

She slept thru all the sooting the boys did that morning.

Three weeks later shes was on board on a big water in my 18 ft flatbottom for divers in Nodak set up the dog pillow and she watched us mostly and when we retrived the ducks she woke up and strted to learn what a duck was.

The sooner you get them in the boat the more comfortable they are with it. and soon it won't matter if its a big or small boat they will end up loving it.

I used to have a Chessy that would jump out of the boat when were headed back to the landing she loved to swim and he colder the water the more she liked it.

One time in my small jon boat she jumped out and it was pretty windy and my buddy said hey we better get the dog in the boat I said calmly Na she has done this everytime I head back to the landing and this time was no different.

That dog swam almost a 1/4 mile right behind us the whole time. I would stop and see if she wanted in and she just swam by us going towards the landing.

I miss that dog

Lucy is 11 months now and twice in the boat. it's in the driveway of course now but when i go to the boat to mess with it she jumps up to go inside. sure she's a chocolate lab and seems to made for hunting. but my days of bird hunting are few with more fall fishing involved. she's going to be my fishing partner till she cant go anymore. even then i will help her along if possible. just like i hope someone helps me get in a boat or to my hunting spot when i get older. good luck.

My Black lab Anna is usually my fishing partner.

She has only been out in the boat a couple times this year though.

Most of the time she curls up on the floor and goes to sleep.

Most of the time I do not even know she is with me.

She is a great boat dog.

Of course right after I write that paragraph the pooch decides this weekend was the weekend she was going to see what a musky lure tastes like. Some quick action to immobilize and some hook cutters kept the issue minor. 2 minutes later I don't think she knew anything had happened.

Figures I would write something like that then something would happen! Oh well, everyone still had a good time.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
