3 Way Lights/Switches

Recommended Posts

Hopefully one of the sparkys here can verify because I'm not an electrician, but this diagram should help. If you use more than two switches, one or more 4-way switches must be added between the 3-way switches.

The light can be placed anywhere in the return wire, shown above as white. It may be as shown at the end of the run, but it may be between any pair of switch boxes, or even between the panel and the first switch box. You can use as many 4-way switches as you like.

:-), its not to bad once you figure it out... but you need to find a GOOD diagram and go from there... the last time I did them was when pa stuck my running wires in our "new" basement when I was about 13/14ish.... I got em, but it took some nut scratchin...

Yeah, this is my last project in basement, then ready for inspection, been all over internet, big box stores, read above, etc., changed wiring out twice, i do have the lights "working" but they flash (like strobe light)and are weak in emitting light. may be time to call in an expert in 48 hours. i have been working on this one issue for 3 days, pretty much brain fried and sick of it at this point

this is how i have it wired now with the result of weak flashing lights

does anyone know if it is possible to connect any other separate lighting circuits up to this anywhere just for the juice power but lights that would run on separate switch? thx

and you should be able to run as many fixtures in a "series" (not sure on proper use of term) at the end of this system correct?

In theory...YES

Legally...NO, there is a limit to how many fixtures/outlets can be on a single circuit. A Sparky should be able to chime in with that information.

really? enlighten me

You had it right. You through me by using the work "common" on your drawing. Most 3 way switches have two gold colored and one black screw, with the black being the power or switchleg.

You can add lots of lamps or a few lamps, it's all based on the power consumed. 1800VA is about all you want to draw on one 20 amp circuit. That figure gives you room to operate whatever it is at a continious load and not worry about an overload situation.

Is this possible or does a single 3 way circuit need to be on its own all the way to the panel? a simple yes or no will do, thx

Yes, its possible, as long as there aren't too many lights total (drawing more than the circuit can handle.
