Bear Bait

Recommended Posts

Curious to hear what combination of baits guys use to have success. This will be my second run at this. Two years ago I wasn't successful and want to put the odds in my favor this year. Any help is appreciated.

Did you get a bear into your bait? sometimes its not the bait, but wat we do that can make ar break a hunt. Im sure if your were on the forum last year you got a pretty good idea, an jay has real good bait suggestions. But all the great bait wont do a bit a good unles u think like a bear, which is easy, I like lots of different food, so do bear, leftovers are ok but the fesher my food is the more i enloy going back to the same resturaunt. Bear like routine, same same same, if my routine gets jostled around i get fussy. Everytime you bait, try to keep the same time frame, the same habits going to an from the site. If you whitsle going in whistle everytime. you drive a four wheeler in drive one in everytime. DO NOT have someone bait for if you cant make it, better to skip a day than risk having someone new scent polute the area. if you hunt with some kid, cameraman, then they bait with you. Changing bait is a two sided coin, one yur changing routine an adding something different which can spook a bear, otherside is newer yummier hey I like this stuff even more, this is my crib. Its hard ro choose, I like keeping sweeter stuff to add graduly as i get more consistant hit then I like to add meat to keep them comeing back, beef scraps an sweets. High carbs an dessert. A bear can tell wat he like an dosent. Never give up if your getting hit an he dissapears even for two weeks, he knows where your store is an its a matter of time before he comes back. Natural foods pull a bear of a site like a magnet. He'll keep an eye on the prize but not hit it till he's good an ready, so you have to keep upwith refreshing your bait if one gose ghost on you. If i'd choose a bait combo, doughnuts soaked in grease, beef scrap, an granola mixes. then throw in some candy mollassa mix goodie stews. If you use a bug repellant wen u hunt, use it wen you bait an spray at the site to acclamate the bear to the scent. I could go on for a while, but it boils down to Fresh bait alweays, keep same routine, an persistance. save the tricks when for later in the season. Good luck Boar

I did have a bear coming to the bait in after dark. But never before sunset. The only thing that came in on what seemed to be a schedule was coons. I didn't have a trail cam then but I will have one this time around. I was using trail mix, jelly beans, licorice, bread...

A cheap bait to try is popcorn. Takes a little time but you can pop it up yourself for cheap. Several guys I have hunted with have had good luck with it along with grease. The guys that I know that are really serious bear hunters have a freezer they designate for bear bait. That way they can stock up early on meat scraps which can be hard to come by when we get closer to opener. There is a lot of competition for bait. Depending on how far your going to be driving to hunt for a lot of people it makes more sense to hire a guide. Start figuring out gas at $3.75 per gallon and all the other cost and you might rethink doing it yourself. I have never used a guide for bear hunting but if gas keeps going up I might consider it.

Hiring a guide won't be an option. THe wife still thinks I am just throwing food and money at the bottom of a tree to feed the animals. If I tell her I need to pay for a guide I'll be staying in the fish house.lol
