Recommended Posts

You will pay the tax when you register it with the county motor vechial registor to get the vehical in your name. You have to have the paper work of the sale to show them.

There are multiple taxes such as wheelage tax, technology tax, probably an underwear tax....but the two you care most about are likely the registration tax and the sales tax. The registration tax is determined by the base value of the vehicle and the year. Currently, anything that is a 2002 or older is just $35 to register. They have tables that can help you figure it out here, starting on Page 12: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/Pages/Registration-Tax.aspx

As for sales tax, it's 6.5% as described below unless the vehicle is 10 years old AND both the sale price and market value are under $3,000. This can be found on page 5 of the DMV link from above:

Quote:
Due on the net purchase price of the vehicle unless the purchase is

exempt from sales tax or qualifies for one of the following in-lieu

taxes:

$10-In-lieu Tax – charge on passenger vehicles, ten model

years or older, when the purchase price and fair market value is

under $3,000. If the fair market value or purchase price is

$3,000 or more, the vehicle does not qualify for the in-lieu tax.

$90 In Lieu Tax – Charge on passenger class vehicles and fire

trucks registered in a collector class.
