What line to use?

Recommended Posts

Just won a new Musky rod and reel at a fishing banquet. A 6500 ABU Garcia C3 on a 7 foot Compre rod. New to Musky fishing and wondering what line to use for casting bucktails and the like? Thank you in advance.

Congrats on the win, sounds like a nice rig, and the best part is it was free. You'll get a lot of recommendations here but I'll throw mine out.

I use Power Pro in the 60 - 80 LBS range. I have tried others like Tuff and Spiderwire but always seem to go back to Power Pro. The super braids are the only way to go when fishing Musky, they allow you to get the fish in a quick as possible for a safe release and they also minimize the odds of losing one of your expesive Musky lures.

Good Luck

I have Tuff Line on all three of my Muskie set-ups. They range from 55-80lbs. I use white color line for my bucktail rod. Just my two cents worth.

A lot of people use mono for backing on super braids, in the 10-20 lbs range. This will help you fill your spool without using 300+ yards of super braid and in effect keeping the cost of line down and keep the line from slipping on the spool (very important). I have heard only about 100 - 125 yards of line are needed for the super braids on your reels. Other simply use duct tape or electrical tape to anchor the line to the spool, users choice I guess. I perfer backing Power Pro isn't cheap stuff.

kid what is meant by backing ; is to spool some mono on the reel before putting on the braids. you want a layer or two so the braid will not slip on the spool.( with out the backing and or if the spool doesn't have a hole to run the line through it will spin ) if you have a large line capacity reel, you can partially fill the spool with mono so it only takes a 100 yds or so of the braid to finish filling the spool.

When you say add mono first, do you then tie the two lines together (mono and powerpro)? What type of knot do you use? Thanks

when you buy power pro it has a diagram of how to tie each one to it.

but the bottom line is to tie 2 uni knots. you have each line going the opposite direction with some overlap. take one then the other and tie a uni knot. then pull them tight together and cut the tails.

Do not go lower than 80 lb Power Pro or Tuff....Both great lines! You'll experience more backlashes with 50 or 65lb unless the 50 or 65lb is on a bass reel, like a Curado, etc....

80lb Power Pro is considered Industry standard! Most use 100lb for the heavier lures 3oz's and up....

Just go to your local store and have them spool it on for you! Then have fun fishing!
