Marine VHF Radio

MallardMayhem

Question

Looking at buying a fixed vhf radio cuz the handheld just doesn't have the clarity or distance. Might be able to get a hundred yards then I can just hear the other boat but they can't hear me. Looking for any recommendations or info on what some of you are using out there. I'm looking at a 3 ft. Antenae cuz I don't want a space needle in the air when casting muskie lures. What kind of distance can I expect to get? Thanks in advance for all the info.

With VHF, height of the antenna is everything when it comes to getting range.

After that, quality of the antenna is important for range and clarity. Not as important as height, but important.

IMO, a 3 foot antenna is not worth it ........unless you're mounting it to the top of sailboat mast, or the top of hard-deck cabin. It's not too common to hear of guys who are happy with their 3 foot vhf antennas.

Good luck.
