putting on steel sheeting on the roof

House roof?

I would for sure remove the shingles, just better all the way around to check things, remove the weight, and better for the panels. DOS, Do use a synthetic felt, Do use a non abrasive ice and water guard ( one with a cloth type face rather than sand) The sand will wear at the rear of the panel and cause rust. Regular tarpaper can warm under the steel to the point where the tar starts to run, and can cause tar runs to show up on your soffits and fascia.... Otherwise, make sure your first panel is square with the roof, and if possible mark out the top and bottom layout of each sheet to make sure you keep going square across the roof. Also, be prepared to spend some time at it if it is not a plain straight gable roof. If its a straight and simple roof it will go extemly fast, If it have valleys or hips, it will take a lot of measuring, remeasuring, and measuring again, as you HAVE to have the cuts correct, or it will look poor, or not work, and cause the need to order more panels...

You can put it over the shingles, you just have to strip the roof out with either 1x or 2x. We have guys do that all the time. Saves on the disposal cost of the shingles. You can only do this however if you have one layer of shingles on.

Tearing the shingels off is the better way to go. We still like to see the stripping over the ice/water and felt. the added airspace helps keep the temp down.

Manufacturers actually dont recommend using Ice and water at all under steel. Usually the manufacturer recommends putting at least 30# felt between the steel and shingles if you apply directly on top of the shingles. We usually strip the roof with 2x4's and then attach the steel to that. It ensures a solid fastening and avoids screws hitting seams and not holding. I called our building inspector about this one day and he said as long as we follow manufacturers recommendations we were good to go right over the existing shingles.
