96 Cutlass transmission

My son is your typical "Goin to vo-tech, workin a couple jobs, paying tuition, paying housing, eating raman noodles, and has no money" kind of kid/young man. So when his tranny finally died I agreed to help the feller out. He limped the car from Sioux Falls where he's going to skool to my place and took my car back with him.

I found a transmission and brought it home.

I was looking things over and decided this is a bit of a job in the garage without pulling the engine, so that's what I did. With the engine out it only takes aboot another half hour to get the trans out.

The question I have for the experts out there is knowing hindsight is 20/20, is there an easier way to do this or is pulling the engine the way to go?

You would use an engine cradle to support the engine from the top. You then drop the subframe and pull the trans out the bottom.
