Stand up jigs

Depending on the bottom content and the speed of your presentation/bait preference, yes, they are more effective.

I use alot of stand up jigs if it's weedy or rocky. I feel a "normal" jig gets hung up to much in these situations. I go pretty slow with the stand ups, so it keeps the bait standing up. If I am hopping, swimming or dragging the jig back I will use a normal style.

Memorial Day weekend last year I was out pitching jigs tipped with shiners in shallow water around a creek mouth on a sandy shore. I out fished the other two guys 5 big eyes to 1. They have there time and place. I really like them for early season when you are fishing slow.

I like standup jigheads for vertical jiging with short rests on the bottom between lifts and I also ike them for certain rip jiging applications. I typically will use them over sandy bottoms without much cover and gravel flats. They can be a bit of a pain if the bottom is weedy but seem to work well in standing cabbage when working plastics and you can wiggle and jiggle them while at rest before giving them another rip or gentle pull.
