whats wrong with the tranny?

I may be wrong here, but I am trying to recall what that model has etc.

It could be a bit of effort because you have to remove the clutches to remove the tranny. Its not hard, just takes a lot of time and depending on the condition of your clutches you might need a clutch puller if the secondary doesnt just slide off.

I also dont recall if that models rear end is a IRS or SRS and if its shaft drive. the swing arm bushings can be a bit of a pain to remove and re assemble as well but like I said I am not sure if that model has them.

It looks to be shaft drive with SRA. If it is the transmission that's bad, you might have to raid the savings account.

The cost of parts could range anywhere around $20 to over $1000 to replace the entire transmission with new parts. Depending on what's bad.

Not knowing what the symptoms are, it's hard to say an exact cost. This was a fairly common machine so used parts wouldn't be out of the question.
