Smoothrock Lake Ontario

Recommended Posts

Who's your outfitter? Family members and I have been up there several times through Pipestone Fly-In Outfitters. Mike runs a 1st class outfit. Their cabin in on the very south end of the lake so that's all I know. Always in the 1st week or two in August. I don't think you'll be disappointed anytime but as anywhere the earlier you go the shallower the fish are. Overall walleye fishing was anywhere from great to fantastic although we had slow days too. Finding pike wasn't a problem either although they are more hit/miss. Several pike over 40" last year. We haven't dialed in the lake trout although we don't try very hard either. There are some pigs there based on pictures. We caught most of the walleyes on reefs in 20'-33' on jigs and salted minnows but pulling raps and plastics worked too. Beautiful country! Check youtube...there are several videos there.

Great to see a reply!!! smile

Im flying in with Thunderhook Fly-Ins.

I've been all over trying to find as much info as I can, including Youtube, and you're right there are some good videos from there! Im not sure what areas of hte lake our "resort" is on. Im hoping to make quick work of the walleyes, and TRY to get some Lakers.....Pike will fill the midday lul.

What are you biggest fish from up there? Any idea?

We've covered most of the lower half of the lake and I never seen another cabin much less something the size of the Thunderhook camp. My best guess is you are on the northern half of lake somewhere. All I can say is WOW! Media center and Wifi on a fly-in. To each their own but I go to get away from all that.

Lake is pretty massive. I took a look at Google Earth but the resolution's not the greatest to be able to see that camp

We've caught multiple eyes over 24" with my biggest at just over 28". I've seen photo's of fish over 30".

Good luck and enjoy (like that will be a problem!)

When fishing Lakers didi you guys vertical jig? How deep typically are they that time of year? Id like to catch one!

I wouldn't complain either! I used primarily white but also green, orange and red too. I don't think color made much difference. I ran out of white and used plain lead colored jigs and caught just as many fish. For lakers we tried vertical jigging with hair jigs & pulling minnow baits behind in-line sinkers. We just couldn't get deep enough trolling with the gear we had. Most of the fish we marked were between 50'-80' down. I know some groups actually bring small downriggers with them but we didn't due to weight restrictions. For pike we just had a mix of spoons, stick baits and spinners. A copper red-eye was the hot lure last year for the bigger pike in shallow water.

I recommend a portable depth finder if you have one. It really helped with getting on structure and helped us avoid a few incidents with the prop on mid lake boat busters! It always amazes me that one boulder can lie just under the water in the middle of the lake surround by 50' on all sides.
