g man46
We are headed up to LOTW (Oak Island area) a week from today for some walleyes and northern/muskies. I was wondering which would be better to target this early in the season for muskie, submergent weeds or shallow rock points? I am looking at a map to try to form a strategy. Also, I've heard that muskies relate to shallow's adjacent to deep water. How deep is deep? Are we talking 30+ feet or is 10+ deep enough? Thanks for any help. NoodleSalad
Deep is deep-say 30+. I normally stay in 15 or so and cast shallower. Sloping rocks on shore tend to concentrate debris into the area hence making it a fertile area. This is one thing to look for when fishing a lake that is a majority of rock. Hope this helps. -NS-
Steve Foss
You'll also find that the weedy bays often fall between rocky points, so if you target points, in some cases you'll be able to just foot-pedal the trolling motor between points, casting to weeds as you go.Not all the weeds occur that way there, but they do often enough. Not sure how much growth there'll be, since I've never fished up there in early June.Likely you'll find fish in both, though the muskies tend not to be as active until th water warms later in June and July.Frank Walsh at the Bay Store on Oak Island guides for muskies, and he's a friendly guy who probably will help you with some general tips.Good luck.------------------"Worry less, fish more."Steve Foss[email protected]
