Its a Triton trailer built in Wisconsin sales person stated it had 1 axle electric brake with the other one opional. Can't see why they would order a trailer not legal in MN I guess I will see tomorrow when I go to get it.

snowfighter,

This is by no means the final word, but when I bought my tandem-axle trailer about 10 years ago, the dealer told me it had brakes for both axles since Minnesota required them on both axles, although most of the surrounding states didn't. I couldn't find the law on the MN DOT site, but did find a trailer towing site that gave the laws for each state. That site said Minnesota requires brakes on each wheel for trailers rated at over 3000lb. I'd call DOT & get final word before wasting the gas.

When I rebuild a trailer last year the DOT at the scale told me brakes on both axles and a brake away system. That was on a 6000# trailer. I would still check to make sure because they are always changing things.

Thats what I found on a site today. The trailer was ordered in to a dealer in Forest Lake MN then brought up friday to a Grand Rapids dealer, so I will see tomorrow ,being it was ordered in to dealer in Mn one would think they would ordered to meet DOT laws if not we will be going around and around!

I would not buy this trailer. If you got stopped and a officer noticed no brakes on one axle you would be sited for unsafe equipment and have to have the trailer hauled home or to a impound area, worst case senerial.

Had already bought it yesterday on dealers word it was legal, contacted him this morning that he was wrong (I called DMV) he is in the process of making it right.

Well guess what I talked to a Highway patrol commercial inspector today and he read the laws back and forth and because I would NOT be commercial but recreational basic the trailer would not have to have brakes on both axles. He stated the laws changed about 3 years back there is some different situations one being I would have to pull with a pickup not car and other situations after ready the law he even shook he head. I would be good to go.
