Scoot
As I understand it, leader apps go like this-Solid leaders- jerkbaits and topwatersStranded leaders- bucktails, cranks, and othersFlourocarbon- ???How strong and resistant to wear and tear are the flourocarbon leaders? Is it worth the arm and leg you pay for one? Do I really need three different types of leaders or is this a gimic meant to hook suckers such as myself? I was thinking about getting a few solid and stranded ones and letting it go at that. Will spending $9 on a flourocarbon really be worth it?It seems like a muskie's teeth would rip through a flourocarbon leader in a hurry- even if it is 100 lb. test line. Also, is flourocarbon really that invisible if you have to get it in 100 lb. test? It seems line that thick might stick out regardless of what it's made of.Scoot
fisherdog19
Scoot, as far as leaders were conserned for me, I used the same two titanium leaders the whole season. A 75# solid and a 50# braided for their respective applications. I thought about trying flourocoarbon but couldn't justify spending the money knowing that I did well without them and that they probably wouldn't last to long or the possibility of losing a monster. In my opinion if the fish is hungry it will hit you lure regardless of what type of leader you have on. The titaniums may cost little more but they won't kink and bend and need to be replaced as often, saving you money in the long run. Just my opinion.FisherdogPS-Have you been able to work on the wife at all for saturday? guideman
Hey Scoot,In my opinion floracabon is junk! Unless your fishing gin clear water I would say "forget about it"!Muskie fishing, for the most part isn't a finess presentation. I also use Titianium and they will last you forever, unlike floracarbon which I have cut on rocks.------------------Terry "Ace" SjobergAce guide service.aceguideservice.com218-753-2612[email protected]
Fisher Dave
I personally havent tried the florocarbin leaders .. BUT ..I use 30 LB Stren or Trilene Big Game in the late fall of the year when using live suckers. I have never lost a musky due to them cutting the line... whether they were 30" or 50" .. it didnt matter, the stuff holds up well. The success ratio improved greatly switching from metal type leaders to the mono. For lure applications I have not noticed any difference no matter what material the leader is.Northerns are another story. They are more prone to cut the line .. I dont know exactly why, but I have a firm belief that their teeth are much sharper on the sides, even though they are in the same family. I have only had 2 mono leaders cut, and both fish were positively northerns.

Scoot
Fisherdog,Where did you find a one piece (solid) titanium leader? Virtually all of the one piece titanium leaders I find are multi-strand. I'd like a 9" 70-100 lb. solid titanium leader, but I can't find one. I'll settle for a 12" if I can't find the 9"er. Help! I've checked Reeds, Thorne Bros, Cabela's, and some big muskie outfit in Wisconsin and come up empty-handed.I'm thinking about going out on Wed. or Thurs. Can you get out? I'm probably going back to Big C so I can leave the boat there when I'm done. I got a new toy for my b-day last week. Man does it kick butt! Pretty sexy little muskie rig. 6' 10" medium-heavy, titanium guides, cork handles with a pheasant feather inlay (very cool), and a nice reel to boot. I can't wait to try it out with you. Here's how my next month lays out for the plans we discussed- I won't be fishing this weekend. I'm extremely doubtful for the walleye tourney we discussed. I don't want to commit the whole weekend- one day would be much better. On June 7th my obligations/invitations are as follows- one wedding, one b-day party for a relative, a walleye tourney on Big Pine, and muskie opener with you. If I fish at all it'll be with you for a while in the morning, then off to the wedding.Sorry to be non-committal, but I'm staying non-committal for a while still. I'll keep ya posted.Scoot
