I usually set my slip bobber 1ft. off of bottom, unless it's really shallow (less than 3ft.). I like to twitch my rod as soon as the bait settles, then I let it sit for a bit. If you don't get bit in a couple mins, keep twitching it back to the boat. On calm days I think it's important to keep slowly covering water until you find the fish, then you can sit on them. On windy days, however, I like to find the windblown cabbage/weed-lines, cast upwind a ways, and let the wind work the bobber towards the cabbage/weed-line. Sometimes I will position the boat upwind and just plop the bobber off the edge of the boat and open the bail. Seems to work for me!
