Hooked on Muskies (literally)

I was Muskie fishing last year with my brother and his wife. It was a perfect day, overcast, windy, and a front moving in. My boat was the only boat on the lake. We had high expectations when we hit the water. The first spot we hit my brother had one on his third cast that got off. A couple of casts later he had another one which also got off. Now I have Muskie fished many days without having as much as a follow, so I knew this could be a magical day. Thats when it happened. "There's one" said my brother. I turned just in time to see his muskie a good foot out of the water. After a good fight I grabbed the upper 30's to low 40 inch muskie. My brother, who has caught over a hundred muskies, took the fish from me and proceeded to try and get the hooks out. I quickly went for the camera and the measuring stick. All of the sudden I heard him scream in pain. The muskie had gotten away from him and now the 10 inch suick was embedded in his leg and still hooked to the flopping fish. I quickly pounced on the muskie to try and hold it still. I couldn't believe what had just happened. It happened so fast. He asked for a hook cutters. I didn't know exactly where it was but was trying to tell his wife where to look. When she finally found it my brother and I tried with all our might to cuts the hooks. I had bought a cheap wire cutters and it would not cut the hooks. We managed to get the hooks out of the fish.(it swam away fine). We ended up convincing my brother to go to the emergency room.(he half-heartily wanted to stay and fish)
Just make sure you have a good hook cutter or a bolt cutter and know exactly where it is. It can happen so fast!

I made the mistake of wearing shorts muskie fishing last year and my buddy was taking the lure out of one and it jumped out of his hands and right into my unsuspecting leg. It was flopping like crazy and if the truth is know I was too. I got it out of my leg ok, and it was a good conversation piece for the next three weeks before all of the scabs healed up. Tough fish!!

A number of years ago, (while learning to cast a baitcasting reel), I bounced a Magnum Rapala off the top of my buddies head. 5 stitched in his scalp. Now I keep a First Aid Kit with extra clean rags onboard...just in case.

Those rags came in handy after unhooking a good sized northern. He got his revenge and clamped down on my thumb. More stains in the carpet.

Before finding a tip on-line about covering a northern's eyes to calm them, I got a nice treble-rip on my hand when I was getting the crank out as the Esox gave a nice shake. Been bit a few times, too. Now the first thing I do is to put my hat over their heads to settle 'em down a bit.

That Suick wound sounds fierce! Is it illegal to chum the water if the blood is your own?

Hey Guys,
Always remove the hooks in the net, not
in the boat. This eliminates the need for trips to the emergency room!

PS. NEVER take a photo with the lure in the fishes mouth....or you will, sooner or later, get stuck.

Yep, those hooks are not made to come out easily. I got a hook set in my thumb when carelessly removing my crystal minnow from a small northern's mouth. The first shake he gave drove the hook into my thumb, past the barb. The second shake he gave sent the point and barb out the side of my thumb. I am pretty happy it happened like that because I don't know if I could push it through myself. I just had to cut a hook off with a side-cutter and pull it through the hole in my thumb. I think I'll pay more attention to the fish, no matter how small it is.

2 summers ago my wife and I were fishing bass when I set the hook on a smallmouth that grabbed my tube that was caught on a reed ,close to the surface.The thunder bullet came flying and she felt the boat move and looked up and hit her square in the mouth removing one of her teeth!After cleaning up the bloody mess my wife said to keep fishing!What a gal!That winter when I was cleaning out my tackle bag I found her tooth in the outside pocket.When the boat rocks dont look up,DUCK!
